How to Read a Sounding

A sounding is a slice of the sky above one spot. Tap each part to see what it tells you about storms.

Tap any part of the chart, or pick from the list.

Hodograph (0–6 km)

1. Moisture

Are the red and green lines close near the ground? That's the storm fuel.

2. Instability

Is there a big orange CAPE area? Bigger means stronger updrafts.

3. Cap & shear

Can storms break the cap — and does the hodograph show enough turning to organize them?

This example is an idealized spring severe-weather sounding, simplified for teaching.
