Deterministic vs. Ensemble Models

A deterministic run is one possible future. An ensemble shows many possible futures and how likely each is.

Beginner·7 min
  1. 1

    One run, one answer

Deterministic models like the GFS or ECMWF give a single detailed forecast.

  2. 2

    Many runs, many answers

Ensembles start the model many times with tiny differences. Where members agree, confidence is higher.

  3. 3

    Use both

Use deterministic runs for details and ensembles for confidence, especially beyond 3–5 days.
